Duduki tangga pertama di Asia senarai Fortune Global 500


PETRONAS berada di kedudukan kelapan senarai syarikat paling untung di dunia dan yang pertama di Asia tahun lalu dalam senarai Fortune Global 500 majalah perniagaan Fortune.

Syarikat petroleum kebangsaan berkenaan yang dalam nilai dolar Amerika Syarikat (AS) meraih keuntungan AS$18.118 bilion tahun lalu, mengatasi syarikat terkemuka dunia lain seperti Microsoft, Toyota, Bank of America, Total dan JP Morgan.

Senarai syarikat paling untung di dunia itu didahului oleh Exxon Mobile diikuti Royal Dutch Shell, General Electric, BP, Gazprom, HSBC Holdings dan Chevron.

Syarikat minyak Itali, Total dan bank pelaburan antarabangsa JP Morgan pula berada di tempat kesembilan dan ke-10.

Petronas juga berada di kedudukan ke-95 dalam senarai keseluruhan Fortune Global 500 berdasarkan pendapatan syarikat.

Di kalangan syarikat Asia, Petronas yang meraih pendapatan dalam nilai dolar AS AS$66.22 bilion tahun lalu berada di kedudukan ke-16.

Senarai 10 syarikat paling besar dunia tahun lalu didahului oleh Wal-mart Stores yang meraih pendapatan AS$378.799 bilion, diikuti oleh Exxon Mobile, Royal Dutch Shell, BP, Toyota Motor, Chevron, Ing Group, Total, General Motors dan Conoco Philips.

Senarai 10 syarikat paling besar di Asia pula dikuasai firma dari Jepun, China dan Korea didahului Toyota Motor (Jepun); Sinopec, State Grid dan China National Petroleum (China); Samsung Electronics (Korea Selatan); Honda Motor, Hitachi, Nissan Motor, Nippon Telegraph (Jepun) dan LG (Korea Selatan).

Sementara itu, syarikat automotif terbesar AS, General Motors, mendahului senarai mencatat kerugian paling besar, iaitu AS$$38.732 bilion.

Anwar Ibrahim in 'Time' magazine's 100 most influential people in the world

He is not in Parliament yet and is still putting finishing touches on a coherent Opposition in Malaysia but Time magazine have picked Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as one of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2008.

He shares the platform with the Dalai Lama, Hu Jintao, Vladimir Putin, Barack Obama, Hilary Clinton, George Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, Aung San Suu Kyi, Rupert Murdoch, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and others.

This is the fifth annual list of leaders, thinkers, heroes, scientists, sports stars drawn up by the US news magazine. The de facto leader of Pakatan Rakyat is one of a clutch of Asians who were listed in the leaders and revolutionaries category. The format calls for a prominent individual to write a short essay about each person on the top 100 list.

Anwar’s citation was penned by Paul Wolfowitz, the former US Deputy Secretary of Defence. This is what he wrote:

"During the 1990s, Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and a group of US Senators organised a forum to exchange views among East Asians and Americans. Asked at one session about the role of Islam in politics, Anwar replied, 'I have no use for governments which call themselves Islamic and then deny basic rights to half their population.'

"This devout Muslim leader was an impressive and eloquent advocate of tolerance, democracy and human rights. So we were shocked by his arrest and trial in 1998 on charges of corruption and sodomy. I felt his real 'crime' had been to challenge Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, whose impressive record will be forever stained by his treatment of Anwar.

"I joined Senator Sam Nunn and others to speak out in Anwar's defence. When he was finally released from prison in 2004, US policy on Iraq was unpopular in Malaysia, and Anwar was harshly critical. It would have been easy for him to disown our friendship, but he is not that kind of person. He kept the channels of dialogue open, even while making clear our disagreements.

"Anwar, 60, is back in the centre of Malaysian politics. The coalition led by his wife Wan Azizah has become the main Opposition bloc. His future role can be determined only by Malaysians. One can hope that they will embrace his brand of tolerance, valuing dialogue across political differences, and that this courageous leader will continue to play a leading role on the world stage."

This recognition for Anwar comes at a time when he is still trying to stabilise the alliance between the DAP, PKR and Pas, and find a place for himself in the new political landscape of Malaysia. He was barred from contesting the election on March 8 because his conviction for abuse of power.

Over the years, Anwar has tried to fight off claims that he is a stooge of the United States and the West. That was one of the main planks in Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s attack on Anwar after sacking him from government and Umno in 1998. More recently, Anwar has had to defend his ties with Wolfowitz, who resigned as the head of the World Bank in shame and is viewed as one of the hawks in the Bush administration which encouraged the US to invade Iraq in 2003.

Still, Anwar’s inclusion in the top 100 list shows how far he has managed to rehabilitate his reputation since his conviction on sodomy was overturned by the Federal Court in 2004. In Malaysia, he has been touted as the prime minister-in-waiting and abroad Anwar has recaptured the media headlines.

Gates no longer the richest, toppled by Buffett

American investment guru Warren Buffett has been named as the richest person in the world, knocking his friend Bill Gates off the top spot for the first time in 13 years.

Buffett, the 77-year-old boss of the Berkshire Hathaway company, saw his　wealth jump from $52bn last year to $62bn because of the rising value of his shares in the firm.

Microsoft co-founder Gates, whose fortune rose by $2bn to $58bn was pushed into third position in Forbes' 2008 list of the World's Billionaires.
He was pipped to second spot by Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim Helu, who has an estimated net worth of $60bn.

Buffett announced in 2006 that he would give the majority of his fortune to charity. Ironically, most of it will benefit the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

For the first time ever, there are more than 1,000 billionaires on the list with 1,125 making the grade compared with 946 in 2007.
Their total net worth stands at a whopping $4.4 trillion.

And the average billionaire - if there is such a thing - is worth $3.9bn, that's $250 million more than last year

The US still has the most billionaires with 469, but Russia replaced Germany as the second-placed country with 87 billionaires.

This year's Top Ten contains a record-breaking four Indians, including steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, who is Britain's richest resident.

The last 12 months also saw an unprecedented number of young billionaires, with Forbes listing 50 individuals under the age of 40.

The world's youngest billionaire is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, ranked 785 with $1.5bn to his name. Not bad for a 23-year-old!

Malaysia's Most Valuable Brands (MMVB)

Maybank Group was ranked the country’s most valuable brand, followed by Public Bank, Maxis, Genting and Celcom.
Global brand consultancy Interbrand was commissioned by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) to evaluate the top 30 brands in the country based on financial analysis, role of brand and brand strength, culminating with the MMVB.

The valuation is based on a proven methodology by Interbrand which pioneered the brand valuation practice and is now recognised worldwide for its annual global brand valuations with corporate publication Business Week.

Malaysia now joins a select few countries in Asia that have commissioned such a study by Interbrand. Taiwan, China and Singapore are the other markets that have recently embarked on similar studies.

The inaugural ranking would assist in emphasising the role of brand contribution in business performance. The rankings provide top line measures of economic performance, stating what the brand is worth overall and among competition.

The total value of those 30 brands in the MMVB07 list is around RM56.5 bilion, which is the estimation of fiscal year yields from a research study implemented for 5 years.

MMVB’07 is different from other brand researcher where it only takes the brand value into account and not the total asset owned by a company. So this justifies why Petronas is not at the top place as everyone might presumes.

To be eligible to be evaluated as the most valuable brand in Malaysia, the company must be established and developed in Malaysia or owned by a public listed company which based in the country for at least 10 years.

Kobe city is at the top of the list behind Singapore. No wonder i like being in Kobe very much. What makes it more interesting is Osaka at the third place sharing the podium with Tokyo. Hmmmm yeah..i think i am living at the right place right now.

As the mount Rokko on its northern side and its location just beside the sea, make it rather appealing by its mixture beauties of nature and cosmopolitan architecture. No wonder i love to be at Kobe very much. My ecstacy towards Kobe become greater as i even ever thought of owning a house in Kobe because i want to live here as longer as possible. Being as one of the premier major harbour in Japan, the influence of foreign cultures and artistic seem rather strong and that's something which contributes to make this elegant city such a unique moreover harmonious place for an expat like me to stay. Thank god..now i am living at the top 5 best locations in the world. Syukran..syukran jazilan.

Singapore or better known among our tribe as Singapura is undisputedly the best of its kind. Yeah i won't argue about the fact as it deserve the recognition. Eventhough i was grown up at Singa utara, but watchout..Singapore is my next target!!

Singapore's low crime rate, clean air and solid infrastructure helped the city-state top a list as the best city in the world for Asian expats to live in for the fifth year in a row, a survey showed on Wednesday.

Three Australian cities -- Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra -- took up spots in the top five while Kobe, Osaka and Tokyo in Japan made it into the top ten, according to ECA International, a human resource consultancy for multinationals.

But Singapore -- well known for its squeaky clean, safe streets -- claimed the spot as best place in the world for Asian expatriates for the fifth year running. "Singapore is consolidating its position at No 1 -- it's continuing to improve," said Lee Quane, ECA's Hong Kong-based general manager.

"I can't find another city that matches it in terms of personal security and safety. Singapore is pretty much the safest place in the world."

With more Asian expatriates being sent overseas for work, the ECA's survey can help determine suitable compensation packages and hardship allowances for expat employees.

The ECA report is based on expat surveys and country data for 254 locations globally on areas such as climate, air quality, healthcare, infrastructure and political locations. Language and proximity to home are also among the top concerns among expatriates around the world.

"Asia is improving at a far greater rate than anywhere else," Quane said, adding that cities in China and India had rapidly climbed up the rankings.

Within Asia, the gap between Singapore and Hong Kong has widened over the last five years.

"We have seen more and more companies and expatriates say they would prefer to relocate to Singapore because of the better facilities," Quane said. That's despite the fact that Singapore ranks lower than Hong Kong in terms of press freedom and recreation, he said.

The Hong Kong-Singapore rivalry is heating up as the Chinese territory's air pollution worsens, pushing it down on the global ranking list from five years ago.

The Southeast Asian city-state is working to improve its image as a place for fun and entertainment, with new restaurants and bars springing up and two multi-billion dollar casinos on the way.

Quane added that one of the most interesting findings in the survey was Macau which, thanks to heavy investments by casino resorts and a fast-growing tourism industry, had climbed to 56 in the global ranking for Asians, up from 80 just five years ago.

Richest Malay in the town..check it out !!

Do you know who are those among the richest malay in Malaysia. Now i am gonna tell you. Kindly refer to the list hereunder. These lucky persons are included into the special selection of Malaysia's 40 richest, which is compiled by Forbes recently. The figures in bracket ( ) implify their position in the top 40 list and the values of their assets tell us in US Dollar. But anyway as the moment i checked the exchange rate is $1 USD = RM 3.5. So you just sum up the figure and then it will apparently comes to your head of how much these people keep in their ample coffer.

However to me, the list is quite arguementable as some of those who are openly well known as the multi billionaires are not into the list. I really curious and doubt on what basis did Forbes regulate the research as far as i've known the richest self-made malay is not Syed Mokhtar Albukhary. Perhaps i'm wrong but this time..boy i damn really confident about this. If you want to know who's the man i regard the richest malay in the country...then scroll down till the end of this entry and you'll find the answer.

So what this list means to me? Well i rather consider it as "The self-confessed richest Malays". You and me should always believe that there are more richest malays out there in the country who'd never publicized their wealth..and most of them probably are having strong linkage and connection with the country's political powers.

And this is the man who since the old days until now, i believe the bloody richest self made malay in Malaysia.
I really mean it..he is the man. Currently the former finance minister (he holded the position twice; 1st in late 80's and 2nd time in 90's) owns the investment bank in Africa region. It was said that he was the first Malay who succesfully ventured into the property development at the period when the industry was monopolized by only one race. The first project which was a token of his victory is Taman Maluri in KL. Since then, Tun Daim bacame among the big player as the property developer around Klang Valley. He was a major share holder of UEP, which is currently known as Sime-UEP which develop the town of Subang Jaya.

Graduated from the prestigous Lincoln's Inn as a lawyer, Tun Daim was already a multi millionaire prior to become a minister in government. He ventured into many business opportunities and owned big sums of stakes in several banking. Perhaps during his tenure in goverment, he could catapult his wealth up to what it is nowadays...hehe well i don't know..i just guess. However there were also some buzz that he was a man behind the scene of many big corporations and Tan Sri Halim Saad (ex-Renong), Tan Sri Tajuddin Ramli (ex-MAS & TRI-Celcom), Tan Sri Shamsuddin (Sapura) and several more were his proxies.

Di kalangan individu yang menonjol yang tersenarai ialah Lee Yeow Seng, 28, dari Kumpulan IOI di mana beliau merupakan taikun paling muda dalam senarai.

Selain itu, Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir tersenarai buat pertama kalinya selepas kejayaan menyenaraikan syarikat utama miliknya, Kencana Petroleum Bhd ke Papan Utama Bursa Malaysia pada Disember 2006.

Influential Books that changed the World and History of Ideas

I Just came across one Malay article written by SHAHAROM TM SULAIMAN (a lecturer at UITM)in Utusan Malaysia dated 8/01/2007 with a title "Kesan besar membaca buku berpengaruh". Even it was quite lengthy yet i found it to be interesting and salutary. So by taking hers for some reference, i decided to come out with my own english article..LOL. The content ? Well, certainly in regard to B O O K S.

Apparently books can change world. No doubt as leastwise for those who read them. And at least this is what has been stated in a book which the title is "Japan As Number One" (1960) written by Ezra F. Vogel. The book unveils the story of how great developments have been achieved in many spheres and disciplines that lead off from the resurgence of Japan during The Meiji Restoration period (1868-1912).

During those period, thousands of Japanese youngsters were sent abroad to foreign countries particularly England, France and German while at the same time a large numbers of foreign teachers were also brought in to Japan to educate Japanese youths.

This strategy was taken in order to avoid Japan from becoming cloddish nation, lacking of wisdom and progress moreover in the early era of modernization.

Japanese rulers had allocated such a big portion of budget for translation works of foreign books in various discipline such as philosophy,culture,industrial, science, and technology. This effort of translating foreign books into Japanese language was for the purpose of technological and knowledge transference from western countries.With all the knowledges they gained from those mammoth stock of books, Japan became a victorious in many fields.

In a book with the title "Books That Changed the World" which was produced initially in 1956 by American Library Association and arranged by Robert B. Downs, there are lists of 16 evergreen classical books that were appraised to have strong influence incessantly on men's intellectual development .

Those who like the 'kick and punch' of politic and power may read "II Principle" by Nicollo Machiavelli; "Common Sense" created by Thomas Paine; "Wealth of Nations" written by Adam Smith, and "Essay on the Principles of Population" by Thomas Malthus. Besides, should you have massive interest on military, why don't you give a try for "Mein Kampf" by Aldolf Hitler or "Art of War" by Sun Tzu which also practically can be a reference book for leadership or corporate & business managerial qualities development.

All the 16 influential books that were listed by Downs had been translated into many world premiere languages.

It seems to be true that those books recommended by Downs implied some kind of relation that bonded amongst the writers. For instance, Copernicus acquired his ideas from the Greek philosophers. Newton, Galileop Galelli, Johannes Kepler on later days had brought forth Albert Einstein. One book with another books, whether in the past, today, or tomorrow always brushing each other thence resulting new phenomena or discovery.

What a naive and something absurd to those people who are talking about bringing development and get rid of poverty yet without any presence of books as a light that capable of flourishing wisdom and universal knowledge. In line of history, we can find out a lot of prove indicating that book is not something insignificant and wimpish. Nonetheless books always become a "burner" for spurs of life and having ability for changing direction of significant events. Books are the nerve of culture and civilization of one nation.

The subtitle of the above mentioned book which arranged by Robert B Downs is "16 Landmarks in the History of Ideas." The author offers 16 selections of books, manuals or pamphlets that changed the world over the past 500 years.The books are divided into two main sections: 1) The World of Man and 2) The World of Science.

On the other hand, world can never deny that there are also many precious books created by muslim intellects as well. Those muslim scholars were such as Ibnu Sinna, Al-Khawarizmi and Al-Ghazali.
